In a post a while back, I mentioned that I’d like to see the version I saw on telly where these geezers in period costume using real period instruments played The March while wandering around the cloisters… Well this is nearly it!
I’m not sure that this is a live recorded video as microphones are notable by their abscence :-| , but nevertheless, it shows what can be done by four blokes making farty noises into metal tubes and one bloke banging a dead animal skin with a stick.
..and one bloke, Henry Purcell, writing the most bitter-sweet music ever written…
Watch out as it really kicks off around 1:10. The ambiance at the beginning is fantastic also. This must have been something like the original procession back in 1695 for the dead queen whose body endured a grand tour of London accompanied by this march…possibly… (This search result discusses some of this topic in the best detail that I can briefly find).
