Lake Bridgwater – has it been this big before?
These are pictures taken yesterday (12 Jan 2008) looking south over an area called “The Meads” in Bridgwater on the Ordnance Survey maps but usually called “the levels below Fairfield wot gets wet in winta” by the local people.
I’m now calling it Lake Bridgwater.
I’ve never seen it this flooded and it gives an idea of what would be the aftermath if Durleigh Reservoir ever broke! I’m standing on the embankment that keeps the little Durleigh Brook in place at the bottom of the allotments.
The council has a plan to leave this area alone. It’s called “the Green Wedge” and is shown as CNE4 on this map of the local structure and development plans. If anyone ever decides to build houses here – then pay particular attention to these photos. The key to the future lies in the past, as they say; and I certainly wouldn’t live there, especially with all the midgies.
One picture contains a dog. The dog is “George”, my Bearded Collie. In the background is the local B&Q DIY warehouse. It should be okay for flooding as any water would go into the canal before it gets in the shop, and the canal is one of the drains for the area, popping into the River Parrett at the docks.
