Yey! Looks like they are all ganged controls which is neat. Are you going for it Mr Studiotoe?
March 12, 2008 at 10:38 pm
They have 8 of em, but no
For that price I want at least semi parametric, no fixed frequencies
Maybe for £35 each
I will see what they go for though
There is a schematic at gyraf website and all the info and I know a guy that makes the pcb
So maybe after re-capping and my Paia gear, Ill go for it

Fixed freq isn’t that bad when you’ve a few of them to choose from. The chosen points are usually where you want them as they are made with lots of feedback experience by users in the field. The best bit is the lower noise levels and higher accuracy as they can use precision resistors instead of scratchy variable potentiometers in the eq components. Also, bear in mind it’s a mike pre-amp and all you really need on this stage is a bit of bass cut or high bass boom reduction (say) before you do your proper mix. Just gently remove a bit of the room or vocal pops etc. But nothing too drastic. That’s for your mixer/digital workstation/outboard processing… It’s seems cheap enough when you consider how much a Neve preamp transformer is!

Ok, that makes sense
Im sure it wouldnt be that hard to mod for a line level or change the resistors for different frequencies
Saying that I wish I had the money now, especially if you mention Neve
o you have ay Scott Walker records or know anybody that wants to get rid of their, not the Walker brother shit, but his solo work
I have his dvd 30th century man. Amazing. Ill burn you a copy if you like?

You may be able to mod it for line level but it uses discrete transistors not op-amps so the sums and types will have been chosen for the purpose. You’d be better off looking for some line amps/eq blocks by the same maker. You could change the resistors for different freqs as well but they are usually pretty well chosen when you get to hear them in action.
I haven’t got any Scott Walker but a guy in my class at school had that name who seemed to know everyone in the UK. I was always bumping into people and they’d say, “oh! You from Ashington are you? Do you know Scott Walker?” !!!

Why are discrete transistors more favoured over op-amps
Is it like the digital/analogue debate?
March 12, 2008 at 11:35 pm
It could be when the thing was made. It took a while for low-noise op-amps to become readily available. And yes. Sometimes it’s like the digital/analogue thing. Op-amps make stuff so easy to design and make. A couple of decent op-amps can replace probably 20, 30 or 40 separate transistors in a thing like this. All that soldering takes time and time is money!
