iggy2 Sony Executive to Search and Destroy Iggy

James Williamson

James Williamson

Something I never thought could happen, given everything that James Williamson has said, is the news that 2010 sees the return of Williamson to play ‘proper’ guitar with The Stooges.

( ‘Proper’ comes from Iggy’s historical description of the band a few years back while speaking to Melvyn Bragg.)

This is the interview (for a week only) on BBC Radio 6,

although the good bit’s in Part two later.

So Ron Asheton is dead, Williamson is back.  Whatever next?  Lets hear Williamson at his best…

There are heaps of wannabees on YouTube playing along to Search and Destroy -- and who can blame them?
This guy, although he’s got pots of mistakes, is about the best of the bunch IMHO because he’s got the best feel for the track and is about the most proficient. He’s also got the backward-bending finger like Holly & Jeff have for doing A-type chords which freaks me out.
the thing to bear in mind about James Williamson’s playing on this trach (and the whole LP, Raw Power), is that they rehearsed something rotten for over a fortnight and the actual track guitar has several overdubs going. Many of the wannabees play the bits that THEY HEAR loudest in their minds, which isn’t the same for everyone else!

I once read that on several of the takes, Bowie (who co-produced Raw Power) kept flipping the cut-in that Williamson was hearing on his headphones ESPECIALLY on “Your Pretty Face is Going to Hell”.
So sometimes James Williamson would hear direct synch sound and others the sound from the playback heads. This fraction of a second, inconsistent, delay, is what gives the tracks so much power, not least because Williamson was aware of what was going on and got rather angry, which comes out in the performance, I think!
This is why I like this guy’s playing -- because and in-spite of, the errors, as the bits he does well, he does very, very well indeed.
