Estonian Spammer Forges CBS and The Guardian

Gmail Spam

I recently received two emails from a friend’s old Hotmail account, but to two of my email addresses.

Probably, the account has been hacked as I could detect no spoofing in the emails’ headers. These are the emails, with the email addresses blacked out.

The text is similar in that they try to entice a user using pretty poor English to click on the shortened URL links, which are active.

The screenshots show the results using a neat Firefox plugin, Flagfox, which displays the source IP address and country on mouse-over.

The WHOIS’s of each domain are almost identical. These are screenshots.

That Arthor Brown’s a one, eh? Notice the Ukrainian, Russian and New York connections? Who is/are or what is:

Googling the phone number pulls out a heap of (not)surprises including an awful cesspit of scamminess that’s now starting to rival Pacific Webworks’ Google Treasure Chest and Jesse Willms’ Colon cleansing efforts! (We saw these scams a few years back – check the links)

Forged Webpages of The Guardian Newspaper

The Guardian, is an old and respected news organisation in the UK. CBS is a long-established US media network.

They, and the purported author of both webpages, Sirena Bergman, must be pretty pissed off about the hijacking of their names.

Also to be annoyed, is Lloyds TSB Bank who apparently are “in association” with this get rich quick scheme for work at home moms!

Indeed they are.

The articles are dated “December, 11:41″, which is odd since there’s no day, just month and time!
Both articles are embedded in genuine Guardian web-pages, with all the links surrounding the article going to genuine Guardian web-pages or genuine advertiser websites!
The hook links in both forged webpages go to http://workinghome22.com/go.php

The forgery is done in the same manner as the well-known phishing scams done for banks and on-line finance and insurance.

Apart from the images sourced from The Guardian, the scammer’s images are sourced from:

The first link was dead, opening a bad gateway so the expected redirect didn’t work. The tracking pointed back to Ireland!

Well, at least the affiliate number 72 is getting paid….

Well, typing the URL directly takes me to workingfromhome22.com! This is it!

Cunningly, you’ll note that it’s pulled out my home-town as Bournemouth (where I live) with that awful “mom” Americanism! No-one in the UK addresses their mother as mom… I mean, FFS?

The webpage links, containing the disreputably used graphics of Thomson, Reuters, CNBC and NBC Universal all point to http://workinghome22.com/go.php, which is of course in this domain. So let’s click it, shall we?

Well, pctrck.com is trying to load, but not much else.

Reversing then trying to exit workinghome22.com produces a pop-up of dubious functionality! Check the words – there’s no cancel button!

Good Question! A WHOIS puts the registrant in China with the DNS servers in Russia!

As I mentioned earlier, the similarity of the scamminess of this thing is just like the Google Treasure Chest/ Google Money Tree / PWW scams of old.

The site is plastered with the logos of well known businesses to ad an air of authenticity to things (just as the original hook sites used The Guardian Newspaper and CBS in the same way) yet at the bottom of the page they disingenuously ad:

Despite all this, it is of course bollox set to deceive. In fact, it now appears that it’s the well known negative option scam, used by Pacific Webworks (PWW) and Jesse Willms to good effect until they were found out.

What I see is bad, really bad, and any attempt by this pack of jokers at saying they don’t run a negative option scam is now revealed on this sign-up page!

The scam is now revealed for what it is – a negative option scam! Read it carefully….. They expressly say;

In teeny-tiny letters, note!

But remember, right back buried in the T&C’s they say;

every 32 days thereafter you will be billed the member’s only price of $9.95 for the monthly use.

This is expressly against the FTC code and laws in most countries. If any extra charges are to be levied for any service or goods, they should be expressly stated on the sign-up page where the customer first enters their financial details.

Conclusion

Negative Options are banned by law in most countries. If you get collared by one, you’ll have a job stopping the bastards taking money from your account for ages. The only sure way to stop this once you’ve been sucked in is through….

Chargebacks. Get your bank or card company to get a charge-back saying the terms of trade or purchase were hidden (as seen in my screenshot above).

So………………….

It’s a scam.
Stay away from it.

FTC Permanently Stops Six Operators from Using Fake News Sites that Allegedly Deceived Consumers about Acai Berry Weight-Loss Products

Above is the FTC’s own headline from a news release yesterday. The story is that they’ve hammered six operators of fake news sites into making settlements that surrender their assets. They’ve also halted the six operations plus those of four others, making ten by my calculation!

What Is a Fake News Site?

Do you really need to ask? !! (These are for news7digest, see more below on this!).

Anyone who even casually browses the web will have seen these news exposes, quite often advertised down the right side on Facebook and in banner adverts on even the most sensible of websites – like this one, say!

How the adverts work is that they are paid for by the operators. They deliberately pay to get premium visibility slots, using Google often, but not exclusively.

The fake news site itself will be plastered with well known icons of top companies (like CNN, BBC, CBC, ABC, Google even!) and purport to be a serious investigation by a journalist into whatever the scam may be. A short list of such scams that we’ve revealed here are:

Acai weight loss
Tea weight loss.
Acai bowel cleanse.
Other bowel cleanse.
Get rippling muscles.
Make money on Google.
Get a cheap payday loan.
Get a cheap government grant.
Get rejuvenation skin cream.
Look younger in other ways.
Gamble on penny auctions.

Just yesterday, Peter Farrahy asked why these fake news sites are still going on this post about Jesse Willms.

So taking his example of the very plausible looking channel4online.co.uk and doing a search on it like so:

…produces several links to the actual Channel 4 in the UK, and the scam site….

This shows the deliberate, deceptive and despicable way in which the site name has been chosen to closely imitate a legitimate and bona-fide news organisation. Fraud, in other words – as the definition says – “an intentional deception made for personal gain or to damage another individual”

Amazingly, if you click the link several times, each effort takes you to one of three different landing pages for a new site, the actual fake news site of,

news7digest.com

This shows up in the header image in two, but confusingly is called Consumer Reporter in the other! They are all visually quite different.

The three screenshots near the top of this article are indeed the three fake news sites which you’ll land on by clicking on channel4online.co.uk.

Conclusion

Is this the end of the fake news sites? Well, obviously not.

They are still very very current and still very very visible. The highly photoshopped images adorn well known websites to the point of irritation. However, the settlement was only yesterday. The note on the FTC statement goes on the say;

A settlement order is for settlement purposes only and does not constitute an admission by the defendant that the law has been violated. Settlement orders have the force of law when approved and signed by the District Court judge.

Despite this, it appears the six defendants are caving in as no appeals have been launched. They are and the details of the settlements are as follows:

Ricardo Jose Labra Labra’s $2.5 million judgment will be suspended when he pays $280,000 and records a $39,500 lien on his home.
Zachary S. Graham, Ambervine Marketing, LLC and Encastle, Inc. Graham’s $953,000 judgment will be suspended when he pays $110,000 plus most of the proceeds from the sale of a truck.
Tanner Garrett Vaughn Vaughn’s $203,000 judgment will be suspended when he pays close to $80,000 over a three-year period.
Thou Lee Lee’s $204,000 judgment will be suspended when he pays $13,000 plus the proceeds from the sale of a BMW.
Charles Dunlevy Dunlevy’s $143,000 judgment will be suspended when he pays an estimated $2,000 from frozen assets and the sale of a boat.
DLXM, LLC and Michael Volozin The $594,000 judgment will be suspended because of the defendants’ inability to pay.

I see it as a warning shot. The actual wording of the terms against the six goes as follows. It’s quite onerous and specific, I think, which means that these News7Digest screenshots at the top of this posting put the operators in deep doggy do if they don’t get their act together pronto. The highlights are mine.

As part of its ongoing crackdown on bogus health claims, the proposed settlements will require that the six operations make clear when their commercial messages are advertisements rather than objective journalism, and will bar the defendants from further deceptive claims about health-related products such as the acai berry weight-loss supplements and colon cleansers that they marketed.

The defendants also are required to disclose any material connections they have with merchants, and will be barred from making deceptive claims about other products, such as the work-at-home schemes or penny auctions that most of them promoted. The settlements also require that these defendants collectively pay roughly $500,000 to the Commission because their advertisements violated federal law. This money amounts to most of their assets.

This all proves that what I and others are saying is wrong – and the FTC is proving it! Virtually everything that the scammers do the FTC has now taken issue with and imposed heavy penalties. It’s now, as they say, case law, as well as being the law of the land. Let’s hope that Willms who chucked his power derived from ill-gotten wealth at me making me pull a page or two for a time, gets his just deserts – sometime this year would be nice.

From Google Treasure Chest to Ubertan Sun Tan Scam in Nevis on the BBC?

An article on the BBC website today highlighted the dangers of a tanning products called Ubertan. On reading it, and following up with a simple Google search, the way it is portrayed in forums immediately set off warning bells because of its similarity to other scams I’ve seen.

A simple Google search showed that warnings about Ubertan have been going on for some time. This website warned way back in April 2011 and here we have a Mens’s Health forum being shilled by Ubertanners with a post starting in Jan 2011… The first even shows that the Ubertan website changed it’s copy when folks started complaining.

The Ubertan website is currently ‘live’ however, it is showing no content! At all! The Google cache is interesting though (more on that later)…

What we see is that “Manufacturers Direct” owns several domains and one Vernon Veira is the contact on the dual island nation of Kitts-Nevis.

It’s two years ago that I started looking at the now seriously-discredited Google Treasure Chest scam (see http://strangelyperfect.tv/3099/google-treasure-chest-its-a-scam-and-a-half/). the amount of information I had, meant I had to post over several different postings, and it was during these later investigations that a Post Office address (P.O. Box) came up on Nevis. In Charlestown.

Unfortunately, I couldn’t remember exactly what address it was. But it’s easily found here a comment from @NotKevin. I think it’s the first time we saw the address, although it has since popped up many times when checking out folks that would be preferred to be known as “online marketeers” but we like to call scammers. This is on the posting, Google Revolution, Different Name, Same Scam!

Uber morphs into Suber, and because the Post Office on Charlestown is one of the few buildings on Main Street, Charlestown; a whole host of P.O. Boxes exist inside.

P.O. Box 642 means 642 Main Street!

Who are these people using 642? I don’t know.

What I do know is that the domains listed by @NotKevin, although not exactly the same, bear a shocking similarity to those domains used by people like Jesse Willms (say) before he decided to turn into a saint-like activist and Pacific WebWorks (say) before they got their pants sued off them. Now compare and contrast those domains and businesses with the very large list to be found here on WebCops – the plethora of time-limited similarly-named domains means tracking them is an onerous task, well beyond my spare time.

However, yet again, we have seen the same address appear when dealing with dodgy ego-massaging products.

Ubertan may be dead, but it doesn’t take long to find son-of-Ubertan when looking at the decidedly un-Caribbean telephone number for Ubertan.

Although it’s supposed to be available from ” high end salons in the U.K, France, Germany, Spain and North America” from their FAQ page, these stores will be doing so ILLEGALLY! The UK government has officially banned it (as per the UK news item) and is EXPLICITLY ISSUING DANGER WARNINGS about its usage!

Still, TryUbertan (WHOIS is Pennsylvania USA) don’t care. They’ll just grab the cash and morph into something else.

The decidedly minimalist website of Toocoo Media Inc, http://www.toocoomedia.com, throws up some interesting conundrums, if that really is their mailing address. There are two LinkedIn links:

The latter is for the CEO, a Peter B. Lee whose 3 website links at the bottom of his profile point to the totally and bizarrely un-related websites of:

Mr Lee, who claims to be Canadian from the LinkedIn profile, also has a poetry blog on blogger assuming the same quite distinct user name is being re-used, which is for invited guests only!!! See The Poetry of Peter B. Lee with the url of http://jumanok.blogspot.com/ I’ve highlighted his key username as it matches the LinkedIn profile. I don’t think that this Peter Lee (interestingly, a place name in County Durham of all places!) is the same who’s name is used in some recent versions of the classic 419 scam. Try these examples for a start:

To add to the surreal mix that I’m uncovering, there are also two videos on YouTube uploaded by a “jumanok”!! One of half a minute looks very much like Mr Lee, doing some testing thing in Nov 2008 here:

And here is “Crystal” telling us how her life state has improved after seeing something on OPRAH (down below she says) – except there’s nothing below!! It appears to be a video plug for something intended to include Oprah in the spiel, except it never happened as there’s nowt to see. This was uploaded in May, 2009. The termination of Oprah-related plans may or may not have had something to do with the legal action, taken in May 2009, by Oprah, and reported here on her website;

Of course, Oprah sued and won damages against a host of scammers, one of which was Jesse Willms.

Conclusion

Time and again we come across scams that are based on a business with a very flakey base (here it’s a banned tanning product with government issued health warnings). Usually, they are about improving one’s body or finances via unproven “new” medicines or foodstuffs, or get-rich-quick schemes.
Time and again we find a myriad of international contact phone numbers & addresses, for businesses that are very minor and specialist yet feel the need to spread themselves to the far corners of the globe. Q. Why? A. Avoidance of easy scrutiny.
Time and again, we trace these businesses via LinkedIn (a bit like Jonathon Eborn, say) and other social networks high and wide. They all start off appearing very legitimate. As an aside, the Eborn results show a consulting website of http://jonathanebornconsulting.com and another of http://jonathandeborn.com/ which have both been hacked and defaced! Made my day that!
Many businesses have a very public website, of minimalist design and content. It’s very hard to discern exactly what they’re doing. Compare these “online marketeers” to the website of Ford or Esso, say? Now can you tell the difference?

Finally, (and very importantly for your health). Don’t shove dodgy untested stuff of unknown provender up your nose. Simple eh?

Laws are like sausages — it is best not to see them being made. Perhaps I should re-phrase this as:

The Rules of Law and International Diplomacy are like sausages — it is best not to see them being made

It’s a strange world out there. Two recent political events have brought two previously unlinked ideas to my mind. The events are:

the Wikileaks exposures of Diplomatic communications between US embassies – the US Embassy Cables.
the use of mercenary forces to suppress local populations in Bahrain and then Libya – see The Bahraini Authorities Recruit of Mercenaries from Makran Town, Pakistan and Bahrain: a different wind of change and Tuaregs ‘join Gaddafi’s mercenaries’

For the Wikileaks disclosures, I see them as a highly embarrassing thing for those involved, but an empowering thing for us mere mortals who are divorced from the diplomatic process. Normally, all the guts of the process are hidden.

In the case of the cover-up of the turkey shoot of unarmed civilians by US helicopter crews, it is something of which we should all be aware, no matter how discomforting for us.

In truth, we need better leaders in the West, people of real morals and guts so that we do not have to see the guts of innocents sprayed on the streets ever again to realise how crap the current bunch are.

Mercenary Forces

Mercenary forces I see as a fact of current and historical life, the old colonial powers especially – indeed, the UK has its own dirty hand in this. For nigh-on 200 years the UK has even had its own full-time mercenaries, the Gurkhas, typically used in near-suicidal conflict situations. Also, currently, from the standpoint of an Afghan tribesman, the British Army in Afghanistan could be seen as little more than mercenaries in the employ of a puppet king, Hamid Karzai. For the tribesman, little has changed – there’s money about but he sees none of it whosoever is in charge.

Diplomacy

In the meantime, we have diplomacy. For the West, this is a world of essentially astute well educated folk, usually adept in law not technology, that seek to make deals with not-so-nice folk for our own country’s benefit.

Because these deals are done at the guttural level, like sausage-making, it’s an unpleasant process to stumble upon – which is exactly what we’ve seen with the Wikileaks Diplomatic Cable exposures. Naturally we are aghast that such things go on in our name. For me, it seems to be a wholly unpleasant process in our current world and something I’d wish to eliminate.

Taking the current crisis in Libya; for the previous three years the Blair/Brown Labour Government has made overtures with Libya, sold arms and even SAS training, but all with the aim of ensuring Libya kept it’s hands off the nuclear button. Seems good-ish. Laudable aims, jaw-jaw nor war-war and all that.

This process, now revealed, is ugly – but no more so than our current Prime Minister Cameron sucking up to some Gulf Arabs who, like Libya, run a similar kind of oligarchic, autocratic, nepotistic state, full of outlandish greed and luxury with no voice for the inhabitants! Seems pretty bad. ……… It is bad. Really bad. It’s the same process as before, and we only do it because we need their oil. Forget about Grand Prix cars and World Cup Football – it’s all about the O. I. L. – OIL.

So What to Do?

Use Oil? Sell Bullets.

Most of the recent interventions of the West’s (let’s call them wars should we – after all, thousands have died?), have been into countries that maintain a nice, steady flow of oil to us rich, lazy, westerners. We think nothing of flying the globe or motoring to the shop for a cheap item that has most probably already crossed the globe once on its way from China, so yes, it’s important we can do this, right?…

On the other hand, our presence in places like Sudan, Rwanda or Congo has been notable by our absence. Millions have brutally died. (a.k.a. we don’t care as you’ve no oil.)

Meanwhile our presence in places like Nigeria or Bhopal, India has been notable for our poisoning of the local inhabitants without a trace of remorse or compensation by those involved.

Not Use Oil? Don’t Sell Bullets.

A Planned Self Sufficient Korean City

Consider our own little part of the world. It’s a place that many people in the world aspire to live because we are essentially free and most material things in our lives can be satisfied.
Consider how bright and technologically advanced we consider ourselves to be.

Now consider a world where we eliminated our dependency on chicken dictatorships – a world where we used our technological prowess to eliminate the consumption of oil and our addiction to the making and selling of arms, mostly to these self-same oil rich oligarchies. It’d be a world where we, the citizenry, didn’t have to look on aghast as all our tax money was spent on bribing simple crooks to talk to us nicely.

Surely, like Egypt & Tunisia, those sort of oligarchies would collapse if we stopped buying their oil and stopped selling them our finest weaponry?

And if they didn’t, so what? There’d be no need for us as a nation to be thrown into hypocritical situations and taking ghastly actions for which we’d later be thoroughly ashamed. Those areas of the world could take their own destinies into their own hands.

And Diplomacy? For us, we should see more not less of the words and processes done in our name. We are not children and sooner or later, if the diplomats have fucked it up, we’re going to find out anyway, much as we did after WW1, WW2 and anywhere else our sons and brothers get killed in someone else’s war.

We need a proper, ethical, foreign policy.
We need diplomats of guile and courage, just like now, to promote it.
And really, we really, really, need to be self-sufficient for all our needs and not rely on corrupt tin-pot states that have not left the Middle Ages in outlook. This single thing is the most important thing for us and the peaceful futures of our immediate descendants.
We need a bit of courage to do this – to wean ourselves off this drug-like dependency on crooks of no substance who happen to sit on stuff we just happen to need, now. Lets use our technological nous and make the current now a thing of the past – like stone axes and bronze swords, historical curiosities.
Mercenaries have courage – after all, if caught they’re usually the first one’s strung up. See Dead Mercenary Taken to Tripoli Morgue, Libia Protests 2011. But if the mercenaries have a proper home – what then? There’d just be the few psychos like there’s always been, because you know, most people, even young hotheads, don’t want to wind up in an early grave.
