It’s Time to Move

Introduction

  • So it’s time to move…
  • It’s time to get down with it…
  • It’s time to testify..
  • …and I want to know…
  • ARE YOU READY TO TESTIFY?
  • Brothers and sisters…
  • I give you..
  • A testimonial…
  • The MC5!

With a vague resemblance to my personal life and status, and a bit like “technology mirroring life”, this domain will shortly be getting legs and pushing off to a new webhost.

I’ve become increasingly frustrated at the continuing dropouts and waits from my current host, ixWebhosting.  They were okay when I first started on this yabberring into space life, but now, in a typical pitmatic Northumberland phrase, it’s become:

Hard to Bear

This phrase closely mirrors my personal status – initial relationship, bright hopes for the future, increasing frustration, hard to bear – but I’ll leave it at that.

Webhosting

Funnily enough, while checking through the many hosting companies, one in particular made me quake somewhat.  This one is BlueHost.  It looked okay until I saw the address as:

Bluehost Inc.
1958 South 950 East
Provo, UT 84606

Now they may be all fine and dandy, but I’ve seen some pretty dodgy shit hanging around UTAH over the last three months.  It’s not all fresh air and snowy mountains by a long chalk  I can tell you,  after my numerous investigations into Google Treasure Chest and other related scams…  So they are out!

Search Problems

Finding a new web hosting service is a bit like Russian Roulette, actually.  It’s almost as bad as the Google scammers as virtually all reviews are loaded and/or fictional.  Honest truth is very hard to find.  The only way to tell is to jump in and test the boiling snake oil!

So what I have done, is to check hosts from sites that I “trust” and use, making a mental check of any downtimes I’ve come across and noting the general speed of these sites, as that’s important.  (I know my site is overloaded with crap, but hey – I hate chucking stuff out!)

So I’ve plumped for Site5.   Only time will tell if I’ve made the right choice.  It’s servers are in Texas but it’s registered in Colorado – yeeHaH

I’ve got a while to play with stuff.  The backend user interface is totally different to the current setup so it’s another learning experience for me.  The only bit the same is phpAdmin, although they use a newer version with a claimed 50Meg upload size for database imports!

Then it’s a question of copying files, setting FTP, setting emails, setting up databases, installing WordPress, re-jigging wp-config for better security and finally, changing the DNS pointers etc at my domain name registrar.  Maybe I’ll move all images to another domain for faster page loading…?

So I won’t be posting much while I’m doing this, and hopefully, with a nice bit of luck on top of my planning, the site won’t be down for too long while waiting for domain propagation….  Watch this space!

Link Checking Arthur 2-Stroke

Arthur 2-Stroke

Arthur 2-Stroke

Having been playing with the neat Broken Link Checker plugin today, I discovered a few links that had gone or changed and set about fixing them.  During this process, I came across a mention about Arthur 2-Stroke who periodically self-promotes himself, even now.  I’d like to share this wonderful experience that I gleaned here at the strangely quiet Newcastle Stuff (at least, nowt this year).

The Ashington Dictionary is a bit of a laugh, for what there is (they seem to have run out of ideas – it only goes up to D in the alphabet).  For those that don’t understand, the definitions are spot on but the joke is in the pronunciation and thus the usage, which mean something totally different.  I won’t explain further, suffice to say that it’s Pitmatic.

The Noise Toys (TNT)

The Noise Toys (TNT)

Anyway, I never thought much of A2S, but TNT, the Noise Toys had one tune that used to crack me up every time.  Probably called Russian Roulette but don’t bank on it, the first verse that Martin sang went like so, I think:

I might lose a game of Russian Roulette

Or fall to me death from a supersonic jet

I might die, within a year

I might die from lung cancer.rrr.rrrr.rrrr

How should I know,

How-should-I-know?

Accent Changes, Gay Changes.

While watching John Barrowman’s fascinating documentary on BBC TV last night (“The Making of Me”, BBC One), I noticed the remarkable change in his accent when he talked to his parents and was reminded of my own Geordie twang and how it becomes stronger when I occasionally return to my cultural roots in pitmatic Ashington!

Barrowman is proudly gay and references are made to this during the Dr Who & Torchwood shows with his Captain Jack character.

Last night’s show was interesting as both he and it struggled to find the answer to some gay questions, such as nature or nurture..  You know, whether being gay is inherited, or acquired somehow, or is all in the mind.

The answer, if that’s the word, is that there are several answers, all of which are out of the gay person’s control.  Some reasons are gene inheritance, womb conditions, the number of previous males that a gay man’s mother might have had, parental infuences, cultural environment during childhood.

A lot of the answer(s) seemed to hang on the presence or otherwise of testosterone in various places.

So from a man’s point of view, the show was very good and severely challenged the catholic, muslim and other weirdly homophobic religions attitudes which basically state that a gay man is possessed by a devil and should be tortured until he becomes straight.

However, notable by omission was any investigation into lesbian, creation, if you like.  The general result for a man was that being gay meant that you have a lot of feminine tendencies, fuelled by testosterone or testosterone rejection effects in the womb.  Maybe there’s a gene, but not always, or one that’s been found, yet.

Being lesbian could be seen to be trending to male tendancies but no investigation was done to research this, because if the same testosterone-type arguments were used, the results would be pointing the wrong way.  The causal relationship if applied that way would imply that all women are gay.  But this can’t be true so therefore a shed load of extra work needs to be done before dogmatic statements are bandied about.  Maybe there’s a gene….. etc etc.

What is important, is that these people are just people.  They do not need help, they do not need persecuting.  Actually, they do not need to be researched and should be let alone…..

….but on the other hand, we humans have an insatiable curiosity, especially about anything to do with sex, so maybe it’s just tough.  That’s why in this country we also have laws that protect the individual.

Crawling Chaos – shouting at dozy twats

Strangely post on December 20th, 2007

I’m just reminded about what this all means so I’d better describe a little known part of Crawling Chaos history that might explain the weird recordings floating about…

Crawling Chaos had a bit of a fan club, that is, they received mail (this was pre-internet etc) from all sorts of oddballs across the globe. Some of these messages would have replies if we felt they deserved one and also, some would include a tape specially recorded for the recipient. The tape was invariably abusive, sarcastic, puerile, full of crap (our opinion at the time) recordings, cuts from other stuff. The permutations could be any or all of this, and more. Very few replies would be straightforward as the mailing usually generated some ire either by being too obsequious, too mad or too bizarre and off the point. However, a sound knowledge of Derek and Clive is all that’s required to bring the humour into focus.

In other words, the mailing got the reply it deserved, following the usual Pitmatic rules.

The point of this is that there are quite a few unique Crawling Chaos tapes floating about, but that the holders, if they’ve kept them, are too embarrassed to put them in the public domain. Certainly in their entirety.

I’d be interested what we said all those years ago. If anyone wants to mail a copy to me I’ll happily publish it. Usually we’d be on something or other when we did it. I do have a copy of one that went to the Texas Cowboy Faggot in Austin, Texas – at least I think that’s what it is. I’ve a bit of work to do but I will release it – I’m not embarrassed by anything.
