For Moyly, Ian, Lorna and George….
Freak Electric Demo Sleeve
Freak Electric Folks
I have an old demo cassette of yours. Now I have remarkable computer power (8 cores at 4Ghz+), Reaper is becoming one hell of a tool. Here I’ve had a 1 hour session at cleaning up what is a really rubbish quality cassette recording, all hiss and sweeping mushiness…. I think it’s better than my earlier effort with different software. Even so, the source tape has no audio over 8kHz so it’ll be dull whatever I do.
Update 8/9/14: I’ve since found two better quality versions of my aged cassette tape. This is one below, starting with one of my favourite tracks. Arseholes to the ambiguously sounding WIND, west wall…? Either way. Crank it up, especially at 11:45. [If done now, I’d thin out the long intro sound and add maximum punch for the loud bit – that’s technical folks… ]
UKIP Hydra [credit: Jon Worth, please click image ]
For months I have endured a deluge of facts and lies, all leading up to yesterday’s election. (I voted Green – there were only European elections in my area, so no local stuff). Mostly, it’s all been around UKIP. They really have stoked the fires, first lit by this government that wasn’t elected and that has done a raft of nasty things never included in their 2010 manifestos. But the fires against the disadvantaged are really aflame now.
UKIP’s backers are some of the sharpest, wealthiest people in the land.
UKIP’s tactics however, have been to take on all crackpots of all kinds, then, when the fuckwit says something beyond the pale, they evict them.
This has the effect of being news-worthy, and as we in entertainment know, all news is good news. The normal triumvirate of red, blue and orange have had a few gobshite moments, but UKIP beats them hands down.
The litany of UKIP’s tactics is strewn across the web, but a fairly recent summary and discourse on them can be found on Another Angry Voice (AAV).
Fact Checks #1
As Tom at AAV noted in the link above, UKIP-ers are not fond of reading anything beyond the first few lines of anything and have a raft of weird ideas all the stuff headed up and analysed with examples, summarised neatly here:
Denial of reality
Just making stuff up
Talking in absolutes
This is a “Hate group”
The Censorship fallacy
You called us racist
Right, I’m definitely voting UKIP now!
It’s all very “lowest common denominator” (LCD) stuff. Confirmation Bias rules, okay!
Fact Checks #2
Though I despise UKIP and parties like them, I do try to check facts, from all over and presented by anyone. Even those that I support get it wrong sometimes. Question everything!
UKIP’s Suzanne Evans on Radio 4
I heard that Evans had been quoted as saying that UKIP ” had difficulty appealing to the educated, cultured and young” with regard to the voting in London. It was on the BBC Radio 4 “Today” programme. You can listen to the whole thing here for the next few days. If you do a Google search for the phrase, “difficulty appealing to the “educated, cultured and young”” a whole raft of websites, news organisations, social media and news agregation websites are all reporting this very same thing. The search produced >1000 – here are 3.
This Reddit chat is a notable exception to the broadcast-info-with-impunity-or-checks brigade and also has a link to the interview. They say she never said it and provide a textual view of the interview.
The trouble is, she never actually said it! This is my recording of the show, editted down to Suzanne Evans’ interview and compressed for audio clarity before MP3-ing it.
It’s True – She Never Said It!
Ukip members wait for results of local election in Croydon
So why are all the news sites and almost every Google search result saying that she did? ( Well almost all – a Reddit chat also says that she never said it. ) The Independent report even has a nicely forlorn UKIP blokey.
In the interview, then interviewer actually says that it was a colleague in London (not known, not named) who, she said, UKIP “had difficulty appealing to the educated, cultured and young”
The truth of the matter is that people hardly ever check anything nowadays.
The deluge of information is too great.
Everyone expects reputable news providers to do properly journalistic background checks.
The BBC interviewer never checked.
The truth of the matter is that all news providers are in collusion with the establishment to maintain the neoliberal status quo.
The UKIP freaks who commented on AAV are correct in that it is a conspiracy.
UKIP freaks are right in that the BBC shows anti-UKIP left-wing bias.
The trouble with #2 is that UKIP contains part of the powerful establishment elite.
Farage is a former banker and apart from a host of wealthy backers, the normal tory paper (Daily Telegraph – torygraph in common parlance) is now swapping sides since the tories are not right-wing enough for it’s wealthy owners, the reclusive, island-owning, tax-avoiding, feudalistic, Sark-criticising (because it won’t allow them to set up a tax haven), Barclay Brothers.
Many other establishment papers likewise share a divisive, right wing, xenophobic stance.
The BBC has had rafts of governement enforced right wing management changes (government plants is the phrase).
The BBC has given more airtime to Farage than any other panellist on “Question Time” except for Dimbleby.
Bay of Skaill
I’ve been playing with a digital extraction of Skaill on Reaper. Have a listen. Guess what’s been done….
A video is to follow (slow encoding to get the quality I need) which is highly appropriate given my partly Orcadian roots and the track title. Skaill is the final track from “C” – “The Big C”, by Crawling Chaos. It is Jeff Crowe and myself jamming with some post recording tape twiddling. Skara Brae which we both fascinated by is nearby and is why we chose the track title after getting the Ordnance Survey map out! Thanks to Jeff Lynne on TV the other night for some inspiration to get this project started.
Kicking off the shop I’ve reworked (…er…shouldn’t that be ‘am in the process of re-working?…) all tracks from the two previous CD issues. Finally I’ve had a decent handle of the articles…
Some have been substantially changed which may upset the purists, my current modus operandi being to imagine myself back then using the current software and equipment I now have at my disposal, then to change the existing 2-track recordings to best fit this basic idea. After all, they’re already in the digital domain – so I may as well try and make them something like how I/we wanted originally, but was thwarted by technology.
In tandem with this, I’ve whipped out some jam and hidden parts in tribute especially to Paul, Jeff & Garry, because this was the core of many creations that appear on those two releases and turned them into something dark and tragic, as that’s how I currently feel about their absence from the planet.
As Steve Jobs once said,
“Remembering that you are going to die is the best way I know to avoid the trap of thinking you have something to lose. You are already naked. There is no reason not to follow your heart.”
All this stuff is competitively priced compared to the muffled output from the usual on-line stores.
The Spookhouse design is currently being set. Downloads from the CD will be available following the CD release.
These will be released, mainly as download, for other artists wanting to contribute to to the Foetus Products collective sound resource. This isn’t a joke. We really mean it folks!
I’ve set it up using open-source software on the foetusproducts.co.uk domain. All links are secure where they need to be using a SSL Certificate I bought from GoDaddy.com, as they were had a special offer going…! It’s security level is the highest you can get (it uses a 2048 bit key), which means folks should have no qualms about their bank getting raided or whatever if they buy from us.
Users will have a choice of two financial transaction processors – PayPal and Google Checkout for which I’ve set up merchant accounts. They’re ubiquitous and most people are familiar with their operation nowadays. I thought about using Amazon, but they don’t currently process for digital items.
The reason that we’ve gone this route harks back to our (i.e. Crawling Chaos’s) independence of spirit – and because our returns will be on par to going the iTunes route, say, for distribution. We lose about 10% commission in the transaction process compared to a lot more through online download stores.
No doubt hoards of guitar players were avidly checking James Williamson’s fingers in this clip, just to make sure they had it right!
For me, I’m just glad I’ve got to see it in case I die before May or something else happens. The guy is still great – so many fills, so many runs, and all backed up by the hard track running through. Williamson made so many variations and overdubs, they’re all right, somehow.
Because as he’s previously said, he (they) never knew when the song would start or what Iggy would do next. This means that when you’re used to winging it, it forces the creativity from you because you MUST keep it interesting. The real guts of the track is here, plus some of the key riffs.
He’s a genuinely modest guy to people he respects and is fiercely proud of his achievements, as is obvious from his past interviews and just watching these clips here.
This is an unreleased acoustic track of Iggy’s and James’. I wonder if they’ll do it in May?
Over the last couple of days the strangest thought has plagued me. Two simple ugly words have kept emerging, only for me to lock them out and ridicule them as bizarre. Simon’s dead. Just to write it down feels like … Continue reading →
If you ever needed confirmation that the UK is not run by a shadowy cabal of sinister plotters but a bunch of chinless fucking idiots then the upcoming Digital Economy Bill is a good place to start. As well as … Continue reading →
