Bay of Skaill

Bay of Skaill

I’ve been playing with a digital extraction of Skaill on Reaper.  Have a listen.  Guess what’s been done….

A video is to follow (slow encoding to get the quality I need) which is highly appropriate given my partly Orcadian roots and the track title.  Skaill is the final track from “C” – “The Big C”, by Crawling Chaos.  It is Jeff Crowe and myself jamming with some post recording tape twiddling.  Skara Brae which we both fascinated by is nearby and is why we chose the track title after getting the Ordnance Survey map out!  Thanks to Jeff Lynne on TV the other night for some inspiration to get this project started.

This is the video on the Crawling Chaos website, though the sound hasn’t encoded as well as I’d liked.  The link above has better sound with the forthcoming CD even better (natch).

No fuss.

My old friend Jeff recently died.

Waqqaz

Waqqaz

The track now playing was one of the last pieces we did together.  It’s Jeff’s creation  and is one of my favourite Crawling Chaos tracks.  This is a pre-Waqqaz version from a cassette that has travelled round France, been in various glove compartments and cupboard floors.

I’ve taken it straight from cassette and it’s encoded at the maximum bitrate for MP3 files in Reaper for your enjoyment.  I’ve just used a noise gate set at -20dB and a bit of compression to follow in this extract.   For me, the mix is better than the final vinyl one despite the 12kHz frequency cut-off.

It’s Jeff at his finest.

Jeff Rees

Jeff(R), Rees(L)

I remember him sitting cross-legged on the floor at Bebside for about a fortnight getting the various harmonies planned out.  My input was minimal and I just did a few block keyboard chords as instructed, to bulk out the end as well as the mixing on the guitars and the drums set-up.

The real work was within the complex interlocking guitar parts, of which there are at least six, all played by Jeff.  The only words I could think of came to me in a dream.

Purple Flower

Purple Flower

I ensured that they were on the penultimate bounce so that they couldn’t be removed.  I didn’t know why, at the time, I thought of them (apart from the corniness) or why I strove to ensure their longevity.  I instantly knew though, that this was Jeff’s finest work, for me, and I’ve listened many times to it since, mainly this cassette tape version.

But now, I know that one’s karma transcends space and time and that one can affect one’s karma in the distant past.

E.Y.E.S.Currently, I am heavily affected by EYES, believe it or not.  I have chanted to change my karma both now, in the future, and in the past, and the benefits are immense.

So now I know why I woke up with those words in my head 25 springs ago.

It was so that I could write this piece about my old friend Jeff, and remember him and all the joint experiences that we had together  since we were 14.

Goodbye Doomage.  Till next time.

Introduction

Some time ago I tried out Flickr, ultimately deciding to host my own pictures on-site.  I don’t the idea of someone having MY picture resource at THEIR beck and call…

Freeman Dyson and Martin Rees

Freeman Dyson and Martin Rees

Whatever.  FlickrHQ sent me an email today (from “The Flickreenos” by gad!) introducing me to something they call,

People in Photos.

As they say,

People in Photos is a new feature that shows who is in a photo, helps you find photos of other members, and lets you manage which photos you’re in. How exciting!

How exciting indeed.  A bit like photo tagging in Facebook…..

Surely Shome Misstake?

Strangely Perfect 2009

Me!

Anyway, check out the photo (above), and you’ll see that the ‘Martin Rees’ referred to in the photo is sat next to one of my heroes, Freeman Dyson, and is none other than the former Cambridge Physics professor and now Astronomer Royal, Martin Rees.

Not me.

Conclusion

So you see, my lack of faith in Flickr is totally justified!

Hey Google Treasure – The Jig is Up!

Just like Professor Fate in The Great Race – the Jig is Up!

This video is from an Utah TV News station reporting on the recent FTC clampdown on Google Treasure Chest.  Apart from the collapse of the call centre which gave refunds to unhappy people (200 employees is stated, which gives an idea of the scale of the operation), a very interesting thing is to read the comments on the article lower down…

Many are from the call centre operatives who are peeved at losing their jobs.  In fact, they can’t see anything beyond the fact that they’ve lost their jobs.  One, “Laura“, a “single mom with two kids”, says it’s terrible she’s lost her job and she thought everything was leagul (sic). This stands as stark contrast to other former employees who readily admit they knew what was going on and are still laughing at the people who got suckered.
There’s also the tale of “Brandi“, another “single mom of 3 children” without a job who’s had shedloads of cash whipped from her. Bizarrely, Brandi lives in Utah.

Perhaps Brandi andLaura should meet and discuss the pros and cons of greed?

What I see here in those comments is the Nazi camp guard syndrome of people just following orders.  Everyone is blaming everyone else without accepting any personal responsibility and having very low personal morals towards the well-being of their fellow humanity.  This is both the scammers, the scammers’ employees and the scammed.  Those Utahians criticising the FTC should try and remember that the FTC are just applying the law, decided and voted upon by “THE PEOPLE”.  (i.e. “that government of the people, by the people,  for the people, shall not perish from the earth”).

Utah really is a shite place.  A bit like Consett.

My Comment

This is the bit I added to the Utah stuff on Fox13Now:

Pros and Cons – but mainly cons! I first reported on these scammers back in early April – see http://strangelyperfect.tv/3099/google-treasu…
Since then, the scammers have rapidly been modifying their T&Cs, which I’ve dutifully been reporting in later pieces. So @thisisBS is showing a new version of the redtommorrow page – and he knows it, as @Chuck Turner has pointed out!
AS for the call centre lay-offs. Is this true? Will people be able to get refunds? I think people’s best bet is to be lodged into a class action against the scum and to register their names with the FTC to get a share of the $300m that is being claimed back as their “ill-gotten gains” as it says in the charge sheets.

A bigger problem has now been unleashed on the world of course. The google scammers have extensive contacts and shell companies set up in County Durham, UK as well as Gibralter, Phillipines and Cyprus. Although it looks like the heart of the initial explosion of scam filth has been quenched, the shockwave of secondary businesses continues unabated. For evidence of this, just check the junk spam emails in your inboxes….
I get a daily deluge that points back to scam sites with far worse T&Cs than the current redtommorow one in the link above. In fact, they are exactly the same as the Google Treasure Bollox from 3 months ago!

Spooky Bing Testing for Alice

Strangely post on June 1st, 2009

Initial Test on Bing Search Engine

Following the initial release, I demonstrated the new Bing to Alice using this search here:

http://www.bing.com/search?q=alice+rees&first=1&FORM=PERE

The second result was for a Facebook  entry.  Naturally we had to look….  If you check out the webpage;

http://www.facebook.com/people/Alice-Rees/787904218

…you’ll find it’s not our Alice…  but weirdly,

  • the face is like one of her friends
  • the thumbnail of Michael Murtadha is almost Rocket Mole on Facebook
  • the thumbnail of Katie Palmer is almost that of our Smeegol on Facebook

Confused?  We know what we mean…  It’s was still spooky though, when the little pix popped up!

The solution?   Don’t go on Facebook, ha ha!
