But watch this video where Vladimir (I’ll have my pen back) Putin takes Oleg to task, publicly forcing him to sign a contract and re-open one of his (private company) smelters.
This, I think, gives an inkling of how the Mafia was ‘defeated’ in the smelters. And now that debt must be repaid. It’s great watching real power in action.
I’ve said many times that Putin is a very, very, long term strategist.
In the news today, although you’d hardly think so because of the Israeli / Palestinian conflict, is the story that the Ukraine can’t pay their gas bills. I apologise for it being a bit buried amongst the profits’ statements etc, but hey!, I didn’t write it.
However, please read the links. Within the blurb is the crushing realisation, like a deja vu, that the events in Georgia this last year, along with all the dire dependency that the West (especially Europe) has on Russian energy, still have not gone away. I’ve banged on about this for over a year now… It’s a sleeping, really obvious, giant, that we choose to ignore at our peril.
Today, only the four links above mention this news. The rest of the world is asleep, mesmerised by the Israeli weaponry. So lets look at it logically.
Western European gets 45% (and rising) of it’s gas from Russia.
My house is heated by gas and I live in Western Europe.
Russian gas is managed by a “company” called GazProm.
GazProm is very similar to US “companies” (especially now :-?) in that the political leaders (Putin, Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld, Paulson) control the companies.
Putin controls GazProm.
GazProm can charge what they like for their gas – it’s a free market and the country (Russia) is well capable of looking after it’s interests defensively, and offensively.
Ukraine can’t pay – they’ve run out of cash.
The Ukraine will get cut off (again!!) in 2009.
The gas for Western Europe goes through a pipeline – across the Ukraine.
Now we are back to square one except GazProm is richer, Putin has more power, the US is bankrupt and a new, unique, US President, has been served a dog’s dinner of an economic and political legacy and been asked to turn it into a banquet to satisfy all tastes.
As an aside, in the research for this article, I came across Pravda again. Each time I go there it gets more and more bizarre…. and I mean, bizarre.
It still has the constant haranguing of capitalism etc from it’s old paper output during the cold war. Some articles are pretty good, almost as good as mine ;-) ,…
But what is odd is two things;
It’s got Google ads plastered everywhere!
Lots of articles look like the National Enquirer or News of the World! I mean, it’s full of “bizarre pics” and provocative tabloid stories like;
Today’s news at the Gas Exporting Countries Forum (GECF) meeting in Moscow, is the final card played in a long game of bluff and revenge started several decades ago by Vladamir Putin.
I’ve been banging on about this for over a year now in these pages. But hey! It’s only me!
So whatever the current vagaries in the short-term fluctuations in energy prices are, and no matter which direction the scurrilous baiting of un-creative Libyan minister are directed, Putin, as leader (under one title or another) of a vast resource rich nation, regaining it’s feet and pride after two decades of over-consuming capitalist humiliation, is having the last laugh that he’s long waited for.
You’ll see in most of my postings I see the future through dialogue, which probably explains the various posturings and bluster from both sides of the energy bartering table currently. Either that, or they’re all mad and WW3 is on the way.
Now we are fully sated in our lust for fresh information on the Credit Crunch and the US Presidential elections, we can now see what’s really going on in the world as the news organs adjust focus for something else to talk about as Ross and Brand are old hat now.
Apart from the potential for some really dire happenings in the DR Congo, we have UK Home Secretary Jacqui Smith pushing for the inanity of ID Cards to counter “terror” again, and also Putin’s wheeler dealerings in Russia coming home to roost.
Just remember, Putin started his push to end where he is now in the early 1990’s when wacqui bacqui Jacqui was still teaching er… economics. It’s all here in today’s news!
Putin, former KGB power monger has always had a big plan. But you know what it is, it’s his job, it’s what he’s always been like!
Former economics teacher Smith on the other hand, has only gut reactions to minor problems and is now trying to plunge us all into a world of fear and doubt again. But there is no terror. Terror is a state of mind. In fact, it’s an hypnotic state of this and the previous Blair government’s mind, hysterically trying to cling to power or dream up new wheezes to justify their positions.
So the real news is that Putin is in charge, as he always was, and will be for a long time yet. Despite his failings and the failings of the Russian system, I believe he has a real mandate from the Russian people for his position. He has actually pulled his country round, which is something the United States’ population have been yearning for, as demonstrated by the recent Obama victory.
The other real news is that Smith is being a bossy teacher, doing her “I know best” thing, when in actual fact, under her charge, our personal security and data (because that’s also our security, in this interconnected world) is like a deck of cards dropped on a casino floor.
An ID Card will be just another joker in the pack…on the floor, for all to see and use. And our UK government has proven it’s got a very low mandate for it’s current actions.
(new bad guy?) Russia (aka Putin Inc), Iran (axis of evil?) and (our friend?) Qatar have decided to collude together like OPEC to drive up gas prices (sorry, control the market in a uniform way beneficial to suppliers and consumers),
…should be seen as a masterful stroke of luck to free ourselves from the hegemony of foreign energy control.
Sorry about the heavy dose of sarcastic irony above, but it really is true. It’s up to us!
Now that the UK government has shown it’s willing to spend billions of our quids ensuring the gambling bankers get their bonuses, it should now also show it’s willingness to invest NOW in alternative energy sources and divestNOW our reliance on dodgy places.
And NOT those stupid Wind Farms!
The only way to satisfy our energy needs is to harness the power of the ocean that we most fortuitously sit in. Simple schoolboy physics says so, not me! It’s all in the equation for kinetic energy that defines how much “energy” something that’s moving actually has relative to something else – like the ground we sit on!
These are some base specs for air and water from Wikipedia.
Average water speeds: ~1-2 m/s (about right, I suppose)
Consider the difference between being smacked in the face with a cubic metre of air and a cubic metre of water both travelling at walking speed…..ouch!
The actual speeds of the air and the sea are very variable. The tides, on the other hand are very predictable, but, it’s estimated the UK only has about 5% of it’s energy needs sat there in the twice daily tides we experience.
But for the sea, tides aren’t the only resource. We are all familiar with the crashing waves of winter and the pleasing waves of summer. This is a constant but variable resource. But compare it to the wind.
It has about the same sort of speed but is >800 times heavier!
If we plug these numbers into the formula for Kinetic Energy, because the average speeds of air and water are about the same, it means that for each cubic metre of water hitting our wave energy device, it has the potential to extract over 800 times the energy that our wind energy extraction device can get from each cubic metre of air!.
Or to put it another way, the machinery we’d need would be an awful lot smaller and an awful lot less visually intrusive.
Now let’s kick out the jams and get this show on the road before it’s far, far, too late.
As an aside, the comment from an EU spokesperson was just bluster and totally without validity in a free world of independent states. Here’s what was said in the Telegraph article at the bottom;
The European commission has pledged to fight the creation of any organisation that could restrict competition. “The European commission feels that energy supplies have to be sold in a free market,” a spokesman said.
Exactly how they intend to fight isn’t made clear. The truth is that Russia, Iran and Qatar are independent sovereign states, mostly with substantial arsenals of weapons that they have previously demonstrated their willingness to use. In fact the EU, and anyone else for that matter, can do fuck all and they know it.
This is why we now have such a golden moment in out history to act positively for our futures. We have no other choice; but we do have the technological and financial capability! We just need the political will to act now!
Over the last couple of days the strangest thought has plagued me. Two simple ugly words have kept emerging, only for me to lock them out and ridicule them as bizarre. Simon’s dead. Just to write it down feels like … Continue reading →
If you ever needed confirmation that the UK is not run by a shadowy cabal of sinister plotters but a bunch of chinless fucking idiots then the upcoming Digital Economy Bill is a good place to start. As well as … Continue reading →
