Biofuel Decision – about bloody time!

Today’s decision by to slow down the massive uptake in biofuels has come as a welcome step in the right direction.  Initially, it was a way for the Tabitha’s and Josh’s in Chelsea and Islington to feel good about running their ridiculous cars – to appease their guilty consciences if you like.  Soon, the rest of the country cottoned on so that vast swathes of non-UK land were used to provide clean consciences for everyone “ooh it’s green so it must be good“.

However, a step is all it is….   We need more.

In reality, to be a completely carbon-neutral country, we should be using not one more joule of energy than our own land mass can provide.  This includes the energy we consume as food.   It’s disingenuous at the highest level to make other people on the world suffer horrendously just so that we can whizz up and down the motorways with gay abandon.

But the fact is, that the UK is sitting on a gold-mine of energy, intellect and creativity that just needs to be set free by implementing the correct laws and incentives.  Then, we will be free of the shackles tying us to the mad mullahs and sheiks, the warmongering US right or ineffectual democrats.

This is one of the things that Nichiren, writing in 13 century Japan, meant when he said:

If the nation is destroyed and people’s homes are wiped out, then where can one flee for safety? If you care anything about your personal security, you should first of all pray for order and tranquillity throughout the four quarters of the land, should you not? – WND I, p24, On Establishing the Correct Teaching for the Peace of the Land.

Without proper energy resources the nation will be destroyed.  From without or within.  One can view the panic that’s starting as prices shoot up even now, when most people can afford them.  Within a few years there will be even less resources to share between even more people, leading to even more conflict than now.  I read some time ago and I’ve forgotten who said it but these words ring through to me now.  They relate to the last two major wars….

The First World War was fought IN Europe.

The Second World War was fought AROUND Europe.

The Next World War will be fought OVER Europe.

What this means is that Europe is sat right between the two major power blocs in the world – The West (US) and The East (China, India, Russia).  ALL have vast arsenals of nuclear weapons.  Europe is on the missiles’ flight path and no matter which side we choose to support in a future conflict, it is Europe that is in the cross-fire and Europe that will cease to exist except as a wasteland.

The UK should demonstrate it’s skills and ingenuity to the world, share the knowledge and make itself non-dependant on ANY person, state or resource.  THAT is the only way forward to ensure peace and security in the land.  We should be a beacon of hope not an example of ill-defined policies and failures.  The world needs it now more than ever.
